The most important use of the word “Zion” is in a theological sense. “Zion” is used figuratively of Israel as the people of God (Isaiah ). The spiritual meaning of “Zion” is continued in the New Testament, where it is given the Christian meaning of God's spiritual kingdom, the heavenly Jerusalem (Hebrews ; Revelation ). After the Fall, the door to Eden had been closed (Gen. –24). But one day the gates of heaven and of the New Jerusalem will open for us, not because of our own merit but because of the shed blood of the Lamb of God. The Book of Revelation describes the New Jerusalem as a city brilliantly lit with the glory of God (v. 11). It is interesting to note that Isaiah’s prophecy emphasizes two major centers: Zion and Jerusalem. The Lord warned, Prepare yourselves for the great day of the Lord. Watch, therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour. Let them, therefore, who are among the Gentiles flee unto Zion.
